Smoke in the room, or a roar in the flue?

Put the fire out safely, then do these three things.

  1. A loud roar, a freight-train sound or flames out the top? That can be a chimney fire. Get everyone out and call 911 first. Signs of a chimney fire.
  2. Smoke rolling into the room? Check that the damper is fully open. If it is and smoke still spills, stop using the fireplace until the flue is checked for a blockage.
  3. CO alarm going off? Get out and call 911. Don't go back in until the fire department says so. Carbon monoxide has no smell.

A cracked flue or a nest can send smoke and carbon monoxide into the house. Fireplaces and carbon monoxide.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you need. Use the form or call us. A photo of the fireplace or the top of the chimney helps.
  2. A local chimney company calls you back. They set a time to sweep or look at it. Ask what the visit costs before they come.
  3. You get the price in writing before any repair. Ask for photos of what they found inside the flue. You decide.

We don't sweep chimneys and we don't set prices. The chimney company pays us for the introduction; you pay us nothing.

Fireplace season in San Antonio

San Antonio stays cold only briefly, and it gets cold often enough. Over the 29 winters from 1996-97 to 2024-25, the airport logged a low of 45F or colder on about 75.7 nights a winter, and a freeze on about 13.8. January averages 21.1 of those cool nights, December 19.4 and February 14.5.

That pattern matters for a chimney. A fireplace that sits unused from March to November collects leaves and nests through a humid summer, then gets lit hard on the first norther. The last ten winters averaged 10.9 freezing nights, fewer than the long-run 13.8, but 2025-26 still brought a low of 20F on January 26, 2026.

Chimney swifts add a twist. They nest in San Antonio chimneys in the warm months, and federal law protects them, so the window for a sweep runs from late fall, after they leave, to early spring, before they come back. Chimney swifts, explained.

Old chimneys inside the loop, prefab fireplaces outside it

About 34% of the 899,316 homes in the 62 ZIP codes we cover were built before 1980, and 41% in 2000 or later (Census ACS 2020-2024). The oldest housing is in 78225 (Las Palmas), 78201 (Jefferson / Woodlawn Lake), 78212 (Monte Vista / Olmos Park), 78210 (Highland Park / Mission Reach).

An older San Antonio house is more likely to have a brick chimney with a clay tile liner, and decades of heat and rain, plus the odd hard freeze, crack both. Newer houses in Stone Oak or Alamo Ranch are more likely to have a factory-built fireplace with a metal flue and a metal chase cover that rusts and leaks in its own way. Chimney repair.

Questions San Antonio homeowners ask

How much does a chimney sweep cost in San Antonio?

Homeyou's July 2026 national figures put a chimney sweeping at $135 to $393, about $274 on average, and Fixr puts typical chimney repairs at $250 to $1,200, about $750. There is no published San Antonio average we trust, and the price turns on the flue and how hard it is to reach, plus what the sweep finds. Get it in writing first.

How often should a chimney be swept in San Antonio?

NFPA 211 is the national fire code for chimneys. It says chimneys and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness and freedom from deposits. Cleaning and repairs follow if needed. In a mild climate that usually means one inspection a year and a sweep when the inspection finds buildup. A fireplace that burns most cold weekends from November to February needs sweeping every year.

Does Texas license chimney sweeps?

No. Texas does not license chimney sweeps or chimney masonry work: none of the 41 programs the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation runs covers chimneys or fireplaces. Gas lines are different. Texas law defines plumbing to include piping that supplies gas. Running or changing a gas line to a fireplace is work for a plumber licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.

There are birds chattering in my chimney. Can a sweep remove them?

Not while they are nesting. Chimney swifts are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Texas Parks and Wildlife says it is illegal to disturb swifts or their nests during the breeding season. Close the damper and wait; Young swifts leave the chimney about 30 days after hatching. The loud chattering is the last two weeks before they go.
